Our Chiropractic Approach

Dr. Lee specializes in the Gonstead Method (Palmer Package) which is a highly detailed and precise form of chiropractic care that focuses on restoring the communication between the brain, the body and the environment. Our brain continuously monitors and integrates sensory information from around the body to accurately perform movements. This integration of sensory information to perform motor commands is known as sensorimotor integration. If spinal segments are moving abnormally this can cause background noise for the brain, or the brain may not get adequate information about what's happening in the spine. A chiropractor gently adjusts dysfunctional segments to restore appropriate spinal movement. For the brain, this is like rebooting a computer. This clears up communication between the brain and the body, leading to better function, less accidents and healthier you!

What Makes Us Different?

We like to say "we connect the dots". Many health care facilities and practitioners treat symptoms. Often times we are left with very little understanding of why these issues exist. The symptoms we experience are a direct result of a problem, not the problem itself. At Total Wellness we strive to educate our patients in improving health and function, as a result making a happier, healthier you!

What Our Process is Not?

Not a "Crack Everything" Approach

Not based on guesswork

Not a "One-Technique-Fits-All" Style

Does not use tools or instruments to adjust

Not a Symptom-Chasing Method

Not a "Quick Fix" without Reassessment

What to Expect

First Visit (Consultation, Exam, X-rays)

Visiting a chiropractor for the first time can be a little nerve-wracking if you're not sure what to expect. Generally, your experience can be broken down into two main phases: your first visit and second visit. Here's a quick rundown of what might happen during each one:

Consultation & Health History

  • Paperwork: When you arrive, or prior to your first visit you will be asked to fill out some forms that ask about your medical history, symptoms, lifestyle, and any current or past injuries.
  • Discussion: Dr. Lee will then sit down with you to discuss your symptoms in detail. He will want to understand your pain or discomfort, its duration, intensity, and any other relevant factors (like activities that may be causing strain).

Physical Examination

Dr. Lee will perform a physical exam, which may include:

  • Checking your posture and range of motion.
  • Palpating (feeling) areas of your spine, muscles, and joints to assess any tension, misalignments, or restrictions.
  • Tests to check your reflexes and nerve function.

X-rays (if needed)

Depending on your symptoms or history, the doctor may suggest taking X-rays to get a better look at your spine or joints.

Based on the results of the patient's history and exam, diagnostic studies may be helpful in revealing pathologies and identifying structural abnormalities to more accurately diagnose a condition. In general, an x-ray is used in the chiropractic setting to help:

  • Diagnose a recent trauma.
  • Diagnose spondyloarthritis/degenerative disc disease.
  • Study a spinal deformity that might progress, such as scoliosis.

Second Visit (Report of Findings, Treatment)

Report of Findings

After reviewing your health history, goals, and exam findings, Dr. Lee will discuss and explain all relevant findings from the X-ray studies. This is an important process in understanding cause and effect. This also allows for the patient to gain better understanding of their issue as well as the intent/purpose for treatment.

Initial Adjustment

  • Once you are ready to move forward with care, treatment will begin. The goal is to help improve mobility, reduce pain, and correct misalignments.
  • Adjustment technique: Dr. Lee uses a hands on approach to apply controlled, quick pressure to the affected areas (spine, joints, extremities). It's a gentle, yet precise manipulation.
  • You might hear popping or cracking sounds during the adjustment (this is normal and just the sound of gas bubbles releasing from the joint space).

Post-Adjustment Advice

  • After the adjustment, Dr. Lee may give you some advice about what to expect in the coming days—such as mild soreness or improved range of motion.
  • He might also provide stretches, exercises, or lifestyle changes to improve your condition further.

Advice for Self-Care

Expect to get more advice on self-care, like stretches or strengthening exercises, posture tips, or advice on managing symptoms in between visits.

Follow-Up Appointments

Based on how you're responding to treatment, the doctor may schedule follow-up appointments. These can range from weekly visits to monthly check-ins, depending on your needs.

What to Expect Overall

  • Pain relief: You may feel some immediate relief after the first adjustment, though it's common to feel slight soreness for a day or two afterward.
  • Improved mobility: If you've been dealing with stiffness or restricted movement, you might notice an improvement in how you move after just a couple of sessions.
  • Ongoing care: Chiropractic care is often a long-term process, especially if you're dealing with chronic issues or long-standing misalignments.

Tips for Your Visits

  • Be open and honest: Share all relevant information with Dr. Lee including any pre-existing conditions or concerns.
  • Communicate feedback: Let Dr. Lee know how you feel after adjustments—both immediately and over time.
  • Relax: It's normal to feel a little nervous, but the process is usually gentle, and most people leave feeling better than when they arrived.
